Damn evaporator

My A/C stopped working. I took it to the shop to get it looked at and it was determined that the evaporator was leaking. Here's the bullshit: $2400 to fix it. The part is only about $300-$400, but it looks like a PITA to change out ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KctZ...player_embedded ). Looks like it's gonna be a hot summer.

Re: Damn evaporator

Yep, some repairs just aren't worth it. The seat heater in my X5 died. I really liked having that especially since the X5 has to sit outside. The seat gets painfully cold. But repairing it means buying a new driver's seat. Major bucks for that. The blower motor also died. I had to get that replaced. It was a $200 part, but 8 hours of labor. That was an expensive fix.

Is the repair price you quoted at a dealer or an indie?

Re: Damn evaporator

Holy crap! That sucks... e36's have o-rings go bad, which is why I'm spending the $xxx amount to have my AC system flushed and recharged.

I'm very much against working in or around the dash, it's impossible to get interior pieces back in place 100%.

Dealer. I have a call in at the indie place. Just waiting to hear back. The indie guy is pretty slow, but he's usually a good bit cheaper. At least I have a reliable bike if it takes him a week or two to fix it.

Re: Damn evaporator

The indie mechanic came back at $1600. I'm not jumping for joy at that price, but that's a little easier to pay than the $2400. It's just shitty I have to tap in to a rainy day fund to pay for an A/C. I'd almost say screw it if I didn't have to drive to meetings every day.

Yea, nothing like showing up where you need to look appropriate....dripping in sweat, I can't imagine what it's like where you live either!
