yeah, well it looks like my car won this round. i set out to change my brake pads today, front and rear, and i couldnt get my tires off.. i think they have corroded onto the mount, and i didnt have a rubber mallet to knock the bastards out. so i was left there tying to devise a way of getting the rim off without denting the sh!t out of it or scratching them. so i didnt get past the first step. [Hammer]
any ideas guys?

That's odd, because when I replaced my pads the wheels literally just slid off. There really shouldn't be anything else holding the wheel on to the hub besides the lug bolts, but I can't imagine corrosion would hold on that tight. Just try pulling really hard, that's my only idea.

I bet one of the wheel lug studs is warped or bent. If you had the brakes done by a mechanic , it is very possible they WAY overtightened the lug studa and bent something.

I had the same problem. I kicked them really hard..... Kick them near the edge of the top and the edge of the bottom. They should come loose. ...and I'm being serious. It worked for me.
Are you worried that you're going to knock the car off the jack? Don't be. Swift kick oughta do it. [Smirk]

Just kick the TIRE not the rim and that's all. That will break the rust or whatever the rim is holding on to and it'll be easy from there.

im going to have to resort to that. Ilse wants to be stubborn with her wheels. but its gonna take a rubber mallet to jar them loose, i can tell. today i was pulling the hell out of them, but i wasnt necessarily hitting the tire like i would my old truck. i need to get this done though. ill do battle with the car no later than monday. ill just not drive it tomorrow.

I would hope so...otherwise, I feel a lot of flaming coming on. [Laugh]
....and don't feel bad about kicking the tire...whether you named your car or not. It won't hurt. 8-)

Another option is to get a long enough thick wooden dowel or metal pipe even and put it behind the rim in the center and put the middle over the rubber part of the tire and yank the shit out of it. This gives you great leverage as the lever (pipe/dowel) will allow for great pulling force. Also, work you way around the tire, like 3 different locations. Just spin the wheel to another spot and repeat the pulling procedure mentioned above.

exactly. thats basicly why my friend and i quit yesterday (besides the bitter assed cold). he is making something exactly like you mentioned where we can put it behind the rim and get some leverage to pry it loose. hopefully i can try it again tomorrow. but i dont think im going to drive in this snow.

Would a crowbar work?

Too short. You could insert a crowbar into a hollow pipe for leverage but other than that it's length you need to get from the hub behind the wheel to at least 2 feet past the outer tire. Then a good yank from 3 or 4 different spots and you should be good to go. Spraying WD-40 (liberally) into the frozen spot wouldn't hurt either.

My dad has some stuff that he puts on the screws where the lugnuts go before he puts them back on to help prevent corrosion. It's some silver sparkly lookin' stuff. I can't remember what it's called. Mike or CarFix, do you know what I'm talkin' 'bout?
Heresy, I would suggest putting something on the wheel next time so it comes off easier...if you can. [Hrm]

You are referring to an anti-seize compound with a teflon base. I use 438 Teflon but there are others out there too. If you neeed one just ask a guy at the auto parts store you go to for an "anti-seize compound" for fastening screws and he will know what you mean.

okay. so heres how it went. the tool my friend made was genius. the bar went across the front of the rim and had two hooks that went around to the inside and had a screw in the middle of the bar that went through one of the holes next to the lug nuts. so no part of the font of the rim was touched. we jacked the car up, sprayed some wd40 and let that sit for a minute, then used the device and it worked beautifully. the pads were very very due for a change.
afterwards we used a bristle brush to clean off the corrosion from the rim and put a light coat of grease around it before putting the tire back on. we only got to the fronts tonight as we were working outside laying on ice as the sun went down. so the rears will have to come this weekend.
one thing though, the brake replacement light on my dash is still on, i dont know if i need to reset it, or how i would go about doing that. we only saw the... thing.. (dude, im so tired im struggling to come up with simple goddamn words tonight, so bear with me, im really not this ignorant...) we only saw the brake sensor wire on the left side and we attached it to the new pads. maybe it could be still on because of the rear pads? i dunno.

Heresey,
Glad it all worked out. Let me know what happens to the light after you switch the other pads.

My brake lining light is on, I replaced the front pads and the light is still there. When the weather improves I'm going to install the rears that I have lying around. I hope the light will go out after that.:-/

I guess it pays to check the brake pads before they fail [RollEyes]. Bimmers got so advanced I'm really lazy with the car, I've been thinking about a coolant change for tha last few months. Guess my mechanic will get another 50 or so bucks soon.

There should be 2 brake sensors on your car (front driver and rear passenger). If the rear passenger pad is low....or the front driver pad is low, you will get a light. It should go out once you have both pads on the sensor replaced successfully with new ones.
If not, I'd see the dealer. The sensors are less than $20 (each). 8-)
